Marriage & The State

For the last six years or so I’ve been of the opinion that the state inserting its nose into marriage is inherently useless. As far as I’m concerned, it’s none of its business (literally). I am a Christian of the Lutheran persuasion (the Evangelical Catholic flavor of Lutheran, to be precise). My marriage to my wife is between the two of us and God, as far as I’m concerned. Why I needed the permission of the State of Tennessee to marry is quite frankly mystifying. At least somebody else thinks (more or less) the same way I do
