Merry Christmas

Well, Christmas is upon us again. In the spirit of the holiday, I present to you one of my favorite Advent hymns …

"Savior of the Nations, Come"
by Martin Luther, 1483-1546

1. Savior of the nations, come,
Virgin’s Son, make here Thy home!
Marvel now, O heaven and earth,
That the Lord chose such a birth.

2. Not by human flesh and blood,
By the Spirit of our God,
Was the Word of God made flesh–
Woman’s Offspring, pure and fresh.

3. Wondrous birth! O wondrous Child
Of the Virgin undefiled!
Though by all the world disowned,
Still to be in heaven enthroned.

4. From the Father forth He came
And returneth to the same,
Captive leading death and hell–
High the song of triumph swell!

5. Thou, the Father’s only Son,
Hast o’er sin the victory won.
Boundless shall Thy kingdom be;
When shall we its glories see?

6. Brightly doth Thy manger shine,
Glorious is its light divine.
Let not sin o’ercloud this light;
Ever be our faith thus bright.

7. Praise to God the Father sing,
Praise to God the Son, our King,
Praise to God the Spirit be
Ever and eternally.

Goat Butchering Closes Hillsborough, NC Mexican Restaurant

A few months ago, my dad was reading the Times Free Press and saw that a local Mexican joint had received a much-less-than-satisfactory rating from the health department because they were keeping live chickens in the food prep area. We had a good laugh over that …

Apparently, that sort of thing happens in the Raleigh area also. Recently, a Mexican joint there was closed because the cook butchered a goat there.

Rape Charges Dropped Against Duke Lacrosse Players

Just saw on CNN that the rape charges against the Duke Lacrosse players have been dropped. Wonder if this has anything to do Nifong’s impending permanent move to Gitmo? Unfortunately, the three fellows still have kidnapping and sexual assault charges pending, so it’s not a complete victory.

More on the Cell Tower Controversy

Earlier in the week I wrote about the foolishness of trying to disguise a tower as a tree or something like that. My brother hasn’t had a chance to get out to Cary to photograph the tower there that looks like some sort of alien life form, but fortunately, today the Times Free Press published an article about the controversy, and included a photo of a ‘disguised’ tower on Bonny Oaks, and I’ve shamelessly linked to said photo:

Hint: it’s the one on the right. Now … does that look like any kind of tree you’ve ever seen before. Personally, I think it’s pretty ugly. In fact … it’s even uglier than the one I wrote about previously. The TFP rightfully notes that
Towers can be camouflaged to look like trees, cacti, chimneys or other objects with varying degrees of success. One tower in Red Bank is shaped like a tree but dwarfs the rest of the real trees in the area.
I’m going to have to go out and check out the Bonny Oaks and Red Bank towers.

Alli over at Chattanooga is Home also blogged about the topic this morning. This particular issue is now of interest to her family, as they have just acquired a cell phone.

That’s a Southern Accent You’ve Got There

I’ve just stumbled upon another quiz that tells me what kind of accent I have (as if I or anybody within earshot when I’m talking had a hard time telling). You may remember that the previous one was something of a failure, since nobody could seem to get more than 90-95% total … sort of like that college professor you had that wouldn’t let anybody get 100 on an assignment, because nobody is perfect. I’m pleased to report that it considers me to be pretty Southern.

Anybody have any idea where “the inland north” is? Michigan? Wisconsin? They didn’t learn me about that in skewl.

Edit: Had to do a screenshot of my results, because the CSS for my blog theme really Nifonged up the HTML table layout. If you wanna take the quiz, head on over here.

Something New is Afoot at Krystal

There’s a new item on the menu at Krystal here in Chattanooga as of today (Thursday). I’m not going to tell you what it is, but I will point you to the marketing team’s blog for a hint. Since I’m signed up as Krystal Lover on their web site, I got a coupon for a free one via email today. I’m going to have to revise my mantra; now it is “What more does a guy need than a #1 combo with Coke, free wireless, and a {fill in new product name here}?” You owe it to yourself to go try one.

Chickamauga Dam Substation

Nothing much … just a photo I took of the substation at the Chickamauga dam a few days ago …

This Is A Test …

I just found out that my favorite blog editor, Qumana, is working on OS X 10.4 again. Now I’ve just gotta try it out and be sure. If this had been an actual emergency, I sure the heck hope you’d be in the basement instead of reading my blog …

Things Are Coming Together

Today I received my business licenses from Hamilton County and the City of Chattanooga (I filed for them on Monday). The next step is to go set up my business checking account … which I’ll do once my DBA registration is approved by the Department of State (I registered “4-8-4/IntuiWorx” as my DBA or alias, and will do business using that name, in order to maintain some kind of continuity with ‘IntuiWorx’, the name I’ve been using ‘unofficially’ as a contractor for the last few years.

So … everything is almost in place for me to get started officially with my shiny new small business in January. I’m looking forward to it … I’ve dreamed of this for years now!

Now I’ve just got to re-design my business web site and start keeping up with the blog there. Between doing that, trying to blog regularly on the ChattaMac (the Chattanooga Mac Users Group) site, and posting here … I might have to become a full-time blogger!
