A Few Trip Photos

We are now safely in Youngsville, NC for Thanksgiving, and I’ve had a chance to cull through my trip photographs (not too many) and choose a few to post. Unfortunately, all my photos of Bella the Shop Doggess of Mountain Spirit Gifts in Black Mountain, NC were blurry. Bella … when we come back by again, you gotta pose. OK?

This is a marina in one of the lakes on the TVA Ocoee River system. We came by after dark, and the green lights reflecting on the water looked so cool I had to stop and take a few photos.

This is St. John’s Lutheran Church in Conover, NC … one of the oldest Lutheran congregations in North Carolina, having been officially organized in 1798. This building was completed in 2003; the two previous buildings were completely destroyed in a fire (the first in 1950), with the exception of the bell tower. One of these days I’m going to schedule a NC trip such that we’re around Conover so that we can attend a service here.

“Not my fault I was double-dipping!”

Ah, finally. At long last, a news story I can wax sarcastic about has appeared on WRAL’s web site.

Background: a few months ago, folks discovered that three Raleigh PD officers were double-dipping by working security jobs while they were on the clock for the RPD. After this revelation, the city made a big show about bringing in outside auditors and the like, and after spending who-knows-how-much money and months of time, they discovered the awful truth … there was no evidence that anybody other than the original three officers had double-dipped.

But wait … they found about 150 “infractions” (which mostly amounted to officers working more time than they were supposed to work cumulatively) … after all, we have to justify the massive waste of money somehow, right?

Now, today … one of the three officers was convicted. Fine. He was guilty. He did something he shouldn’t have done. But … here is this gem of a quote from the story:
The investigation has prompted criticism by some who claim too much blame was put on the officers and not enough on the department. Bryant’s attorney, Bob Hensley, said Thursday he believes that Bryant was unfairly targeted. “The (police) chief can’t take responsibility for it, the city manager can’t take responsibility for it, so, a sacrificial lamb has to be found,” Henlsey said. “That is Charlie Bryant.”
Huh? Unfairly targeted? He was double-dipping, they caught him, and he was prosecuted … how is this unfair? And … since when was it the police chief or city manager’s responsibility to prevent people from double-dipping? I suppose he has a mental condition that made him unable to prevent himself from cheating the RPD and his other employer. Yeah, that’s it.

Night Photos

My photography equipment binge continues. Today my 52mm adaptor, linear polarizing filter, and lens hood arrived from lensmateonline.com (who I highly recommend, by the way … great service, great prices, great products, fast shipping). Then tonight, I went to Wolf Camera and bought a tripod. I decided to test the latter item out downtown. The results follow …

Final Photos of the Day

Today’s photographic objective was the railroad bridge over the Tennessee River, just south of the Chickamauga Dam. Today was my (almost) lucky day. It was lucky because I arrived and found a train parked right on top of the northern side of the tracks. It wasn’t so lucky, because I got in my car to go across to the far side of the river, and heard a rumble … which happened to be another train crossing on the south side of the tracks. I ran back out to the south side of the bridge, but wasn’t fast enough to catch any of the engines crossing. Oh well … there’s always next time.

In any case … it was a lovely day to take pictures. I took about 175 of ‘em; I now have a total of 955 taken on the new memory card, which means that I’ve taken about 1200 total with the camera … all in two weeks.

Here are some of my favorites from today.

Blue Heron

I managed to get a lot of good photographs this afternoon out by the Chickamauga Dam, but my favorite so far is of this Blue Heron.

Here’s a photo of Rachel’s mom and Autumn, from last weekend.

Early Photos of the Day

I now know that it is entirely possible for an infant to scream through 90% of a given night with their volume dial set to 11. Yay!

Here is a beautiful, peaceful photo to contrast with the not-so-peaceful night I had last night. It was taken last weekend up on Signal Mountain. I’m looking toward Chattanooga from Signal Point.

Marion Memorial Bridge

Here is another photo of the Marion Memorial Bridge taken today. I’ll have to go back out when the sun is shining and get better photographs. This is a really lovely bridge, and I am quite disappointed that it will be replaced, which most certainly means that it will be demolished, given its remote location. There’s not really any chance (that I can see) of it being turned into a pedestrian bridge, like the Walnut Street Bridge here in Chattanooga.
