House at Old Salem

Once again, I’m starting to cull through my photos from the trip, and do some edits on those that weren’t necessarily great to start with. I’m having fun learning new tricks with Photoshop and the like. For instance … “Adjustment Layers” (Layer => New Adjustment Layer) are awesome! You can add an effect (modified color balance, contrast, etc.) and activate/deactivate it without doing an undo, and even change the effect later (say you changed the contrast to +17, and decided later to change it to +10) easily.

Here’s a photo I edited with a few adjustment layers. Specifically, I brought out the blue in the sky by adjusting the blue channel, and toned down the red in the roof (which was a bit overwhelming) by adjusting the red channel.

As I look at this photo (and some of the other Old Salem and Southeastern Seminary photos I took over the past week), I’m struck with how much the bare tree branches actually add to the photographs. In the middle of the summer, green leaves would block out much of the roof of this house … but in this photo, we can see almost all of it. The bare brances also add a nifty “texture” to the image.
