This fellow was offering carriage rides around downtown Raleigh when Brian and I were downtown last Saturday. I don’t remember every encountering something like this before … and I think it’s cool that it’s available.
Honestly, I think downtown Raleigh is changing for the better. From my perch afar (first in Black Mountain, and now in Chattanooga) I thought that de-malling Fayetteville Street was a bad idea. I always thought the mall was pretty cool.
But, having encountered the newly re-opened street twice now (once at night with my brother, and then Saturday with Brian) I can honestly say that it makes downtown seem more “alive … and as if that wasn’t enough, the whole area seems safer. I like that.

Once again, I’m starting to cull through my photos from the trip, and do some edits on those that weren’t necessarily great to start with. I’m having fun learning new tricks with Photoshop and the like. For instance … “Adjustment Layers” (Layer => New Adjustment Layer) are awesome! You can add an effect (modified color balance, contrast, etc.) and activate/deactivate it without doing an undo, and even change the effect later (say you changed the contrast to +17, and decided later to change it to +10) easily.
Here’s a photo I edited with a few adjustment layers. Specifically, I brought out the blue in the sky by adjusting the blue channel, and toned down the red in the roof (which was a bit overwhelming) by adjusting the red channel.
As I look at this photo (and some of the other Old Salem and Southeastern Seminary photos I took over the past week), I’m struck with how much the bare tree branches actually add to the photographs. In the middle of the summer, green leaves would block out much of the roof of this house … but in this photo, we can see almost all of it. The bare brances also add a nifty “texture” to the image.

1. Trips are much more complicated with a small child along.
2. Wake Forest, NC really isn’t a place I want to live any more. Once upon a time, it was. However … whatever Cary (NC) has is catching, and Wake Forest has it bad. Really, really, really bad. Soon I’ll be ashamed to admit I know where the town is …
I spent a lot of time thinking about how there isn’t much left I identify with. For instance:But … somebody (maybe C.S. Lewis) said something to the effect of “A person dies a second time when all the people who knew them die.” William Faulkner said “The past isn’t dead. It isn’t even past.” So … I guess for the time being, what Wake Forest was lives on …
3. Polarizing filters are the bomb diggity for photography.
4. Jersey Mike’s makes awesome sandwiches. Dunno why we don’t have one here in Chattanooga.
That is all for now.

These are … umm … some administration buildings for Salem College. Actually, the second brick building with the white windows is the library, I think.
This is the reconstructed “Negro Moravian Church” which eventually became St. Philip’s Moravian Church (see next photo).
This is St. Philip’s Moravian Church. It was builit in 1861, and is the oldest standing African-American church in North Carolina.

So, what does one do when one’s wife spends thirty-some minutes in Oak Ridge, TN at night nursing your baby girl?
Take lots of photos, of course, and make the truckers at the gas station and the employees at the nearby Krystal stare and wonder “What in the name of former Tennessee governor Don Sundquist is that guy doing on the ground with a camera at night?”
As far as I can tell, though, the cops weren’t called, but I certainly amused some folks during the whole process.“Fantasy Land” -Â Thisyer abandoned building was right behind the Shell station we stopped at. As you can see, it claims to be open … but was not. The bottom line on the green sign says “PAY INSIDE SHELL“. There was no sign of “putt putt” or “stuff” (except an overflowing trash can, a broken ice machine, and some metal shelving). Also … on the sign, I get the two Pac Man figures. I see the space ship. The writing makes sense. I understand the lightning bolt. But … what in the WORLD is the black dot with the fire shooting out of it to the left of “Fantasy”?
“Shell at Night” - If you look closely, you can see the ghost of Edward Hopper. I’m not being serious.
“Mecca” -Â Fast food, in the form of little, bite-sized burgers. Free wireless. What more could a guy want?
“Educate Me” - What better place to park a bunch of working school buses (I think there were 15 or so) than behind a gas station?

On the way back home, we stopped at Old Salem so Rachel could pick up some Christmas gifts. I spent the time she was in the shop snapping photos. Here are a few …

Well, the time has come (actually, I think it came some time ago) for me to re-organize my photo galleries. Problem is … I’m not sure how I’m going to do it. However … one thing that will happen is that some (or all) of my shots will start getting watermarks … I need to make sure nobody steals and uses my stuff w/o my permission.
